How Opt-Out (STOP And HELP) Works

The exact words that unsubscribe somebody, what OPVII replies, and how to put them back.

Last updated October 22, 2026

Opt-outs are handled for you, automatically and immediately. Read this to know exactly which words trigger it, what the attendee is told, and how to put somebody back on the list who did not mean to leave.

The Words That Work

Matching is on the whole message, ignoring case, so stop works as well as STOP.

These Opt Somebody Out

  • STOP
  • STOPALL
  • UNSUBSCRIBE
  • CANCEL
  • END
  • QUIT

The reply is: You have been unsubscribed and will receive no more messages. Reply START to resubscribe.

These Put Them Back

  • START
  • YES
  • UNSTOP

The reply is: You are resubscribed. Reply STOP to unsubscribe at any time.

These Return Help Text

  • HELP
  • INFO

The reply is: This is an appointment reminder service. Reply STOP to unsubscribe.

The One That Catches People Out

A message reading only CANCEL is a full opt-out from all your messaging. It is not a seat cancellation, and it is handled before the reply is ever filed in your inbox or sorted into a category.

If you ask attendees to tell you when they cannot make it, ask for a phrase rather than a single word. Can't make it is read as a cancellation reply and files correctly. Cancel on its own unsubscribes them.

Longer Replies Count Too

A reply that is not a bare keyword is still honored as an opt-out if it contains a clear request, including phrases like opt out, remove me, take me off, stop sending, no more email, no more text and do not contact. These are always honored regardless of your own inbox automation settings, but they do not produce one of the three standard keyword replies above.

What Happens When Somebody Opts Out

  1. They are marked opted out, timestamped, with the reason recorded.
  2. They are pulled out of every active flow, so no queued reminder reaches them.
  3. It is written to their timeline as Replied STOP, opted out.
  4. The account owner is notified.

Opting out stops texts. Email unsubscribes are tracked separately, and the event's Details panel shows both as Text Opt-Outs and Email Unsubscribes.

Every Text Carries The Opt-Out Line

The sentence Reply STOP to opt out. is appended to your outgoing texts automatically at send time. It is not stored in your templates, and it is skipped when your own wording already contains the word STOP. It does count toward the 160-character limit, which is why the template editor measures the finished length rather than what you typed. See Customizing Message Templates.

Putting Somebody Back On The List

They can text START themselves. You can also do it for them, which is the right move when somebody tells you in person that they did not mean to unsubscribe.

  1. In the sidebar, under Seminars, click Contacts.
  2. Find them. The Status filter has an Opted Out option.
  3. Open the contact and click More Contact Actions, then Re-subscribe.

You should see Contact re-subscribed. You can also use the Status toggle in the contact's Details panel, which reads Subscribed or Opted Out.

Opting Somebody Out Yourself

Use the same More Contact Actions menu, then Opt Out. To do several at once, tick them on the Contacts list and click Opt Out in the bulk bar.

How To Tell It Worked

  • The contact's row shows an Opted Out badge, or Subscribed after a re-subscribe.
  • The Opted Out tile on the Contacts page moves.
  • Their timeline carries the entry.
  • On Flow Progress, they are no longer among the people moving. Opted-out attendees appear behind the Stopped chip.

If Something Goes Wrong

Somebody Was Unsubscribed And Says They Did Not Do It

Two likely causes. Either they replied with a single word that is on the opt-out list, most often CANCEL, meaning to cancel a seat. Or a tapback reaction on a reminder was delivered to the carrier as text that read as an opt-out. Re-subscribe them as above.

They Texted STOP But Still Got A Message

A message already handed to the carrier cannot be recalled. Nothing queued will go out, which you can confirm on Inbox, then the Sent tab.

You Cannot Send To A Contact

Sending is refused with one of This Contact Has Opted Out Of Text Messages., This Contact Has Not Consented To Text Messages., This Contact Has No Phone Number. or This Contact Has No Email Address. The contact's Details panel has a row for each: SMS Consent, Status, Phone Deliverable and Email Deliverable.

Consent Is On File But Nothing Sends

An opt-out overrides consent. The SMS Consent row says so directly: Overridden By Opt-Out. Re-subscribe them.
